  About two-thirds of China's land area is cold and arid regions with surface characteristics such as glaciers, frozen soil, deserts, salt lakes, oases and grasslands, etc. This region is not only a strategic area connecting China's inland and Central Asian countries, but also a reserve base for water, energy and mineral resources, and an area with extremely fragile ecological environment. It is a key area in China's poverty alleviation, ecological civilization and rural revitalization strategies. The change of global climate, the influence of human activities and the frequent occurrence of natural disasters pose a serious threat to the ecological security and major projects in cold and arid regions of China, and become a bottleneck restricting regional economic and social development. Therefore, scientific data such as glacier, snow, frozen soil, salt lake, desert, Gobi, oasis and wetland in cold and arid regions should be systematically collected and managed. Scientific data such as soil erosion, soil and water loss, landslide, collapse, debris flow and flood in special environments such as loess gully and mountain slope should be systematically collected and managed. The systematic collection and management of scientific data on ecological restoration and major linear project construction in the desert environment of the high and cold plateau, as well as the systematic collection and management of social, economic and culture-related scientific data are of great significance for scientific research on cold and arid regions, ecological and environmental management and restoration, major project construction, border stability and control, and sustainable development of the national economy.


  The National Cryosphere Desert Data Center (hereinafter referred to as NCDC) will be jointly established by Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography Chinese Academy of Science, Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment,CAS, Qinghai Institute of Salt Lakes Chinese Academy of Sciences and Northwest Institute of Plateau Biology and other units were jointly established.

  NCDC has formed a research and support system consisting of seven research laboratories and three research systems, highlighting the research characteristics of glaciers, frozen soil, deserts, atmosphere, soil and water, ecology, environment, resources, engineering, and sustainable development in cold and arid regions.

  In the 35 years since the establishment of the first "Tianshan No.1 Glacier Material Balance Database" in 1985, a series of management standards, methods, and systems for scientific data collection, management, sharing, and application have been established. DOI has been introduced to protect the rights and interests of data authors before other data management institutions, and has rich experience in scientific data management, open sharing, and application support in related fields.


  The data resources of the NCDC cover 10 data sources such as field observation, investigation, experiment, test analysis, numerical simulation, multi-source remote sensing, project convergence, engineering construction, exchange image, processing and production of three major plateaus (Qinghai-Tibet, Mongolia-Xin and Loess) ,three cross-border rivers, four inland river basins, three corridors, four basins, eight deserts, four sandy lands, 11 salt lakes and key linear projects in the cold and arid regions of China.The total amount of data reached 112TB. More than 60% of the scientific data in the research field of cold and arid regions were aggregated, 80% of which were owned by relying units.

  The Center also collected 243 typical research model resources and a number of analysis algorithms and software analysis tools to form a pool of model resources for scientific research on cold and arid regions.

  The collected scientific data and model resources have distinct disciplinary features, prominent regional features and obvious regional advantages. The data transfer is supervised by the data supervision committee of the supporting unit, which guarantees the sustainability of the resource construction of the data center and the rights and interests of the data authors.


  NCDC has formulated 26 operational service management rules and standards, covering data management, open and sharing services, and center operation and management.

  2PB storage environment and 300Tflops supercomputing simulation and analysis environment will be built, Integrated data management and application environment of data, model, computing, storage and visualization has formed. It has formed an application system for data center data management, field station data management and major project data management, formed technical service capabilities such as data collection and transmission, standardized processing, thematic data preparation, and data exchange for major projects, and united 47 field station co-construction alliances of 31 institutions to form a sustainable data resource construction guarantee system.

  The center has formed a permanent work team of 64 people, including 20 full-time staff. An expert group consisting of 6 academicians and 24 researchers has been set up to guide the work of the data center.


  NCDC has 33977 registered users, 55TB of online data, 57TB of offline data, 243 model resources, has provided more than 460 universities, enterprises, government agencies with 6809 offline and 78,684 online 248TB data and model services, has supported nearly 50,000 people of master and doctoral papers,has been cited or acknowledged by more than 2,000 papers. It has supported the research of glacier, snow, frozen soil, desert, hydrology, inland river and cold and arid regions projects, and its achievements have won 2 national grand prizes, 7 national second prizes, and 1 National Innovation Team Award.

  In addition to serving the Baolan Railway, Qinghai-Tibet Railway and the major research program of Heihe River, in recent years, it has provided basic data and scientific decision-making for "Route selection of Chongqing-Kunming high-speed Railway", and thematic data services for "Disaster mechanism research, observation and early warning of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor" and "Water and soil Conservation and Management in the Upper and Middle reaches of the Yellow River". It also provides important support for scientific and technological innovation, economic and social development and national strategies.
