This dataset is derived from the Xinjiang Soil Species Compendium (1993), edited by the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Department of Agriculture and published by Xinjiang Science, Technology, and Health Publishing House. As one of the key outcomes of Xinjiang’s Second National Soil Survey, the compendium systematically consolidates detailed information on 344 soil species. For enhanced accessibility and digital utility, the dataset organizes data into five Excel sheets linked by Soil Species ID and Name:
(1)Soil Classification: Attributes include Soil Species ID, Soil Species Name (Second Survey), Soil Order Code/Name, Soil Class Code/Name, Subclass Code/Name, Soil Genus Name, and Subclass Name (2009).
(2)Basic Soil Species Information: Attributes cover distribution regions, landforms, area, land use, parent material, profile configuration, key properties, and productivity summaries.
(3)Typical Profile Landscape: Attributes include sampling location, geographic coordinates, topography, elevation, parent material, natural vegetation, land use, mean annual temperature (°C), annual precipitation (mm), ≥10°C accumulated temperature (°C), ≥0°C accumulated temperature (°C), and frost-free period (days).
(4)Typical Profile Horizon Data: Attributes detail horizon name/code/sequence, thickness (cm), depth range (cm), color, texture, structure, compactness, and additional remarks.
(5)Typical Profile Physicochemical Properties: Attributes encompass particle size distribution (gravel >2 mm, sand 2–0.02 mm, silt 0.02–0.002 mm, clay <0.002 mm), texture, organic matter (%), total N/P/K (%), available P/K (mg/kg), water-extracted pH, CaCO₃ (%), and cation exchange capacity (CEC).

The dataset originates from a legally purchased hardcopy of the Xinjiang Soil Species Compendium, published in 1993 by the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Department of Agriculture through Xinjiang Science, Technology, and Health Publishing House. As one of the key monographs from Xinjiang’s Second National Soil Survey, this compendium systematically consolidates data on 344 soil species acquired during the survey, detailing their distribution ranges, areas, morphological characteristics, physicochemical properties, and agricultural productivity. It establishes a foundation for soil taxonomy research and provides scientific guidance for rational land resource development, soil-specific cultivation, soil amendment, and fertilization in Xinjiang. This work serves as a valuable reference for professionals and academics in soil science, geography, ecology, agriculture, forestry, and related fields.
The dataset was developed by scanning the hardcopy of the Xinjiang Soil Species Compendium into a PDF format. Based on a thorough understanding of the compendium’s content, data tables and field names were designed according to professional standards. Raw data and textual content were then denoised, standardized, and extracted into multiple relational tables linked by primary indices, ultimately forming the integrated dataset.
Quality assurance measures included: (1) triple cross-checking of scanned and OCR-recognized text by different personnel to ensure consistency with the original version, with corrections applied to identified errors; (2) interlinking of tables via key field names (e.g., Soil Species ID) to prevent misalignment; (3) updating legacy measurement units and geographic names to current standards and administrative nomenclature.
