Paper title:Estimation of Evaporation Loss from Large Agricultural Reservoirs in Arid Zones and its Contribution to local Precipitation: Stable Isotope approach
Paper abstract:The implementation of a substantial number of reservoirs has been widely proposed as the most effective measure for addressing water scarcity in arid regions. Despite the widespread implementation of water infrastructure in previous years, the exact influence of reservoirs on the water cycle continues to be a subject of significant ambiguity. In order to tackle this matter, a hydrological observation system utilizing isotopes was implemented at the Hongyashan Reservoir, a substantial man-made water reservoir located in the arid regions of China. By systematically gathering comprehensive meteorological and hydrological data, encompassing precipitation, river and lake water, we sought to provide a comprehensive understanding of the reservoir's impact on the water cycle. When comparing the GMWL with the LMWL and LWL , it is observed that the latter two exhibit lower slopes and intercepts. This suggests that both precipitation and lake water have undergone significant evaporation. The stable isotopic composition of the Hongyashan Reservoir confirms that it exhibits enrichment in summer and depletion in spring, indicative of its unique characteristics. Furthermore, Hongyashan Reservoir has an average annual evaporation loss of 7.02%, our estimations suggest that the reservoir's evaporation accounts for up to 24.91% of the atmospheric water vapor in the local region, with the contribution ratio declining as the distance from the reservoir increases. These findings underscore the importance of factoring in evaporation losses resulting from reservoir construction in arid areas, and their potential impact on local precipitation, within the purview of regional water resource assessments.
